    Great Filter

These are great filters. Make sure you follow the directions to wet and prime the filter before use. If you filter water with a lot of sediment, the flow rate will slow down. When that happens, remove the filter and follow the directions to swirl it in clean water to remove the sediment, and you’re back in business. Keep them clean and stored correctly, and they will last.

Great but leaks with older BeFree softflasks

Works great. Comparable or better flow rate to the Katadyn BeFree. However, it does leak with some 42mm soft flasks. Specifically, ones such as the BeFree 0.6L soft flask with shorter threads. See photo for an example of the shorter BeFree threads (top) that leaked and the longer Salomon threads (bottom) that worked well.

    Non-Existent Terrible Filtering

I have had four friends and myself get giardia when using this filter, all at separate trips. That is five instances of this filter not working properly! It does not always work and is very prone to breaking with natural jostling around in a pack. When they are brand new, it seems to work. But the product doesn't last and it becomes ineffective very quickly. You can do a test by blowing air in the reverse direction through the filter, if bubbles of air get through, don't use the filter. Even better, buy a filter that works and you can trust, and one that lasts for more than one use. Customer service seems fine, since one of my friends has received about three replacement filters when calling customer service. But who wants a water filter that cannot be trusted? This filter is not worth the risk of getting giardia. I am flabbergasted that Hydrapak keeps selling this fragile filter that is leading to customers thinking they are properly filtering water, but instead they are getting sick from using an ineffective and unreliable product. Yes some people will have success with the filter for a limited time, but the product cannot be trusted as it stops working without notice, you cannot tell that it is not properly filtering, and it breaks incredibly easily. Do not trust this filter.

Good water flow doesn't seem to last long

I picked this up as a replacement of the Katadyn Befree after a hike on Whitney last summer left me with a filter that barely trickled water after only a few months of use. Well the HydraPak started great, with incredible flow and easy filtering the first few times I used it, first on a 3 day backpacking trip in the Sierra and then a one day long hike in Yosemite.

So I took the filter on a trip on the John Muir Trail last week, hoping for seamless and quick filtering. It worked great for 3 days, then the flow was slowed by nearly 75% and what was an easy filter became a forearm burning squeeze to get our bottles full. Luckily we had a resupply and got a new Katadyn BeFree and didn't touch the HydraPak again.

So disappointing to have a filter go downhill so fast after only using it for a total of only a week.

    I got sick

This is the only filter I’ve owned. I followed all the precautions regarding freezing but something must have happened to the filter. I wish there was a way to tell if it is broken or needs replacing. I wouldn’t say I’ve really used it a ton for it to fail already. I loved how small and light it is and I enjoy all my Hydrapak stuff. I got sick and needed treatment for the contaminated water illness.
