Product Spotlight: USWE’s No Dancing Monkey™

Whether you're navigating technical singletrack, logging long gravel miles or spending a full day on an off-road motorcycle, your hydration pack should move with you, not against you. Pack bounce, shifting loads and uncomfortable pressure points can become a distraction, pulling your focus away from the trail ahead.

USWE has built its reputation on solving that challenge. At the center of every pack is the patented No Dancing Monkey™ (NDM) Harness, a carry system engineered to eliminate movement while preserving comfort and freedom of motion. For more than a decade, HydraPak has partnered with USWE to develop hydration systems that complement this philosophy, creating integrated solutions designed for real-world performance.

From a Problem on the Trail to a Patented Solution

USWE's story began in the Swedish countryside, where the founders spent long days riding off-road motorcycles. Carrying water, tools and gear in traditional backpacks often meant dealing with packs that bounced, shifted and caused fatigue over the course of a ride. They knew there had to be a better way.

In 2007, the team bought an old sewing machine and began building prototypes with one goal in mind: create a pack that stayed securely in place without restricting movement. That experimentation led to the No Dancing Monkey™ Harness, an innovative X-shaped chest system that distributes weight evenly across the upper body while allowing athletes to breathe naturally and move freely. Today, every USWE pack incorporates the NDM harness, with each version refined for the specific demands of its intended sport.

Designing for Different Ways to Move

As cycling and trail sports have evolved, so have the demands placed on hydration packs. Mountain bikers need exceptional stability to handle technical descents and rough terrain, while gravel riders often prioritize lightweight comfort and balanced load distribution over long distances. Trail runners require hydration systems that remain secure without restricting upper-body movement.

Rather than applying the same design across every product, USWE tailors each pack to the movement patterns and performance needs of the athlete. Hydration is designed with that same philosophy in mind, ensuring the pack and hydration system function as one.

Engineering Hydration as Part of the System

As USWE expanded beyond moto into mountain biking, gravel cycling, and trail running, the company partnered with HydraPak to integrate hydration solutions that matched the performance of its packs.

From the beginning, the goal wasn't simply to fit a reservoir inside a backpack. Together, our engineering teams considered reservoir shape, weight distribution, hose routing and accessibility as part of a complete system. Early collaborations centered around 2L and 3L reservoirs featuring HydraPak's Baffled Reservoir technology to improve stability and fit. As USWE introduced lighter packs for running and fast-moving adventures, the partnership expanded to include lightweight reservoirs and SoftFlasks™ designed specifically for those applications.

Even the now-iconic red drink tube came from this collaboration, reflecting the attention both teams have given to every detail of the athlete's experience.

Built Through Collaboration

The partnership between HydraPak and USWE is rooted in continuous testing, athlete feedback and a shared commitment to solving real problems outdoors. By combining USWE's expertise in pack design with HydraPak's specialization in hydration, we've created systems where every component, from the harness to the reservoir, works together seamlessly.

Great hydration is about more than carrying water. It's about creating equipment that disappears once you're on the trail, allowing athletes to focus on the ride, the run or the adventure ahead.
